816M40 is a low carbon, high tensile strength steel that is heat treatable and has good mechanical properties. When compared to other alloy steels such as 4140, 4340, and 8620, 816M40 exhibits similar mechanical properties including high tensile and yield strength, good impact resistance, and good wear resistance. However, 816M40 may have slightly lower hardenability compared to 4140 and 4340.
In terms of chemical composition, 816M40 contains 0.36-0.44% carbon, 0.40-0.70% silicon, 0.70-1.00% manganese, 0.10-0.35% molybdenum, and 0.15-0.35% chromium. Comparatively, 4140 contains 0.38-0.43% carbon, 0.15-0.35% silicon, 0.75-1.00% manganese, 0.15-0.25% molybdenum, and 0.80-1.10% chromium, while 4340 contains 0.38-0.43% carbon, 0.20-0.35% silicon, 0.60-0.80% manganese, 0.60-0.80% molybdenum, and 0.70-0.90% chromium. Finally, 8620 contains 0.18-0.23% carbon, 0.15-0.35% silicon, 0.70-0.90% manganese, 0.40-0.60% molybdenum, and 0.40-0.70% chromium.
In conclusion, while 816M40 shares many similarities with other alloy steels in terms of mechanical properties and chemical composition, slight variations in hardenability and alloying elements may make it more suitable for specific applications.
