X2CrNiMo1816 Steel Grade: An Overview of its Composition and Heat Treatment

X2CrNiMo1816 is a stainless steel grade that falls under the austenitic stainless steel family. It is commonly known by its international designation 1.4401 or AISI 316.

Chemical Composition:
– Carbon (C): Less than 0.08%
– Chromium (Cr): 16.0-18.0%
– Nickel (Ni): 10.0-14.0%
– Molybdenum (Mo): 2.0-3.0%
– Manganese (Mn): Less than 2.0%
– Silicon (Si): Less than 1.0%
– Phosphorus (P): Less than 0.045%
– Sulfur (S): Less than 0.015%

Heat Treatment:
X2CrNiMo1816 steel grade is typically solution annealed at temperatures around 1010-1150°C (1850-2100°F) followed by rapid cooling in air or water to obtain maximum corrosion resistance. It can also be subjected to stress relieving at temperatures of around 550-650°C (1020-1200°F) if needed.

Mechanical Properties:
– Tensile Strength: 515-690 MPa (75,000-100,000 psi)
– Yield Strength: 205 MPa (30,000 psi)
– Elongation: 40-50%
– Hardness: 217 Brinell (HB) maximum

X2CrNiMo1816 steel grade offers excellent resistance to corrosion in various environments, including seawater, chemical and food processing, and pharmaceutical applications. It is also known for its good strength and toughness properties.
