Steel prices in Morocco — what was actually paid in 2024

Morocco imported 2.7 million tonnes of steel across these headings in 2024 and exported a tenth of that, and nearly half of what came in was coated sheet. That single line carries the industrial story: car assembly in Tangier and Kenitra, appliance plants around Casablanca, and a building sector that clads and roofs in painted coil. Where it comes from is decided in Brussels as much as at the mill, because EU origin enters duty-free.

What the Morocco numbers say

• Morocco pays between 664 USD per tonne for wire rod and 2,509 for narrow coated strip — a 3.8× spread that separates commodity bar from the processed coil the car plants buy.
• Coated sheet (galvanized and painted) is 42 % of everything imported across these headings, so the Moroccan average is very nearly the price of one product.
• Supply is concentrated, Spain holding 52 % of the top five lanes — a share set by tariff preference as much as by freight.
• On hot-rolled coil and plate the country pays 892 USD per tonne against 678 received, 214 apart, which is what an import-led market looks like on a heading it barely exports.

Buying and selling into Morocco

• Coated sheet is the Moroccan steel market. At 1.14 million tonnes in 2024 it is larger than every other heading on this page put together on the import side, and it is the one figure that explains the rest: galvanized and pre-painted coil feeds the car plants, the appliance makers and a construction sector that roofs and clads in steel.
• Spain supplies more than half of that coil, and the reason is tariff geography rather than distance alone. The EU–Morocco Association Agreement gives EU-origin steel duty-free entry against an EUR.1 or an invoice declaration, so an offer from outside the EU starts several percent behind before freight is counted.
• Tanger Med is the port that matters for anything containerised or destined for the northern industrial belt, and its ro-ro links to Algeciras make short-sea parcels practical. Casablanca handles general cargo and breakbulk with more congestion; Jorf Lasfar is a bulk port. From Istanbul the sea leg runs seven to ten days depending on transhipment.
• Morocco produces long products at Sonasid and is the only country in the region with an integrated flat producer, Maghreb Steel, whose rolling and coating lines cover part of domestic demand. Both are reasons the market is defended: antidumping duties and safeguard measures on flat products have been applied and renewed more than once, and the measure in force on the shipment date is the one that counts.
• Wire rod arrives largely from Egypt — 150,000 tonnes in 2024 at 659 USD per tonne — which makes Morocco and Egypt two ends of the same North African lane rather than competitors on it.
• Construction steel is sold against Moroccan NM standards, and a conformity certificate at clearance is normal practice. Mill certificates to EN 10204 3.1 are accepted, but the NM reference should be named in the contract rather than assumed.
