Steel prices in Jordan — what was actually paid in 2024

Jordan buys 623,000 tonnes of steel across these headings through a single port, and sells a good deal of long product back out again. Two forces shape the numbers: tariff preference, which brings Egyptian wire rod and Saudi coil in duty-free while nearby Turkish material pays; and geography, because Aqaba sits on the Red Sea and everything else moves by road. The export column — bar out, coated sheet out at a premium — is local rolling and coating serving the market next door.

What the Jordan numbers say

• The band in Jordan runs from 614 USD per tonne for wire rod to 1,346 for welded hollow section, square and rectangular — 2.2× — compressed at the bottom by duty-free Arab supply on the commodity lines.
• Hot-rolled coil and plate is 41 % of inbound tonnage; at this concentration the national average import price is effectively that product's price.
• Supply is concentrated, with China at 82 % of the top five — the shape a tariff preference gives a lane, not the shape freight gives it.
• On coated sheet (galvanized and painted) the import value is 881 USD per tonne against 1,256 exported, 375 apart — a converting margin rather than a market spread.

Buying and selling into Jordan

In 2024 Jordan declared 623,063 tonnes of imports across 10 of the headings on this site, against 117,719 tonnes of exports across 9.

• One port does everything. Aqaba is Jordan's only sea access, on the Red Sea rather than the Mediterranean, which puts it on the Suez–Jeddah routing and a long way round from anywhere in the eastern Mediterranean. Everything else arrives by road — from Saudi Arabia across the southern border, and from the north when that route is open.
• The Aqaba Special Economic Zone carries its own customs and tax regime. Material discharged and processed inside it does not face the same duty as material cleared into the rest of the country, and for a buyer that distinction is worth establishing before a delivered price is quoted.
• Trade agreements explain the supplier list better than freight does. Under the Greater Arab Free Trade Area, Egyptian and Saudi steel enters duty-free — which is why 59 % of Jordan's wire rod comes from Egypt and Saudi Arabia is the second-largest source of hot-rolled coil after China.
• Türkiye is conspicuously absent for a country this close. Jordan suspended its free trade agreement with Türkiye in 2018 and Turkish goods have faced ordinary duty since, which shows up in the data: Turkish coated sheet is 2 % of the tonnage at 1,474 USD per tonne — specialty material worth paying duty on, not commodity coil. Confirm the current tariff position before quoting; it has moved before.
• Jordan exports more hot-rolled bar than it imports — 82,672 tonnes out against 48,134 in — and re-exports coated sheet at 1,256 USD per tonne against an 881 USD import value. Both lines point the same way: local rolling and coating for the surrounding market, with Iraq the usual destination overland.
• The dinar is pegged to the dollar, so a USD offer carries no currency risk for a Jordanian buyer and a euro offer does. It is the reverse of the West African position and it changes which currency wins a close comparison.
